Mr. Sims’s 6th Grade Language Arts Syllabus
Shepard Middle School
2017-2018
Welcome to Shepard Middle School! I am very excited to begin the 2016-2017 school year at SMS. I have taught language arts for a total of 13 years as well as other school subjects, and I am looking forward to a year of growth and learning. I believe in having a fun and innovative classroom where everyone participates and are a part of the learning process. The motto for my class is: H.Y.P.E. (Helping Young People Excel)
Expectations:
Here at Shepard, we expect the best from our students behaviorally and academically. Please see me or visit my website for class expectations: mrsimslanguagearts.weebly.com.
Grading Expectations and Philosophy:
In my classes, I believe that we can learn and have fun learning. Many assignments will be independent and/or collaborative, depending on what we are doing. Also, learning vocabulary terms is key in order to be able to be good thinkers and writers and will be one major focus all year along with other concepts:
Literature Analysis
Writing
Grammar and Punctuation
Vocabulary
Reading Strategies
The weights of grades for my classroom are listed below. Because we do a variety of activities and many students learn in different ways, I am equally distributing the weights for grading:
Homework – 10%
Class work – 30%
Tests/Quizzes – 30%
Projects – 30%
Parent Conference Procedure:
If you would like to come in for a conference, please contact the school: 919-560-3938
Contact Information:
I look forward to working with parents to ensure that your child is receiving the very best education possible. Please do not hesitate to email or call: harold.sims@dpsnc.net , mrsimslanguagearts.weebly.com (blog), or you can chat with me using Remind 101. By using Remind 101, you can receive text messages of what your child has for homework, projects, announcements etc. Text the number: 81010 with the message: @mrsimshw to sign up.
Each student will need a 3inch ring notebook for class.
Absent Policy: Each student is responsible for getting the work missed if they are absent from class. Student will have to come to me personal for the week they missed when they return to school. For example, if a student is absent Monday and Tuesday and returns to school on Wednesday, the student will have to come to get the work missed for those two days. The student will have two school days to make up the work for a grade. The same rule applies if the students is out for 3 days or 5 days. The student will have the same amount of days being absent to make up the work. If a student asks to receive work and a day or several days later upon their return from being absent, the work will be counted as a zero. If work is turned in late, it will be counted as a zero. I am understanding of situations which may occur. Please don't hesitate to communicate with me your concerns.
